2009 QUARTER MIDGET CLUTCH TYPE DYNOS

We now have a low cost Quarter Midget Dyno using a simple jackshaft and clutch. It allows you to start your engine with a simple hand held electric starter, walk over to the dyno, engage the data system, go wide open throttle till maximum rpm, shut off system. Do S.A.E. weather correction, download data and graph it or make reports of any data you wish. It’s accurate enough to see .001” jet changes on gas very easy. I worked with a GX120 and made several changes and saw everything I changed on the computer screen. See acceleration data to see exactly were engine acceleration slows or stops, see engine head temp, exhaust temp, air/fuel ratio, oil crankcase temp, etc. with the right data system. This dynos also allows you to dyno any engine up to 25 to 30 hp with a ¾” or 1” output shaft using any clutch. A Premier Titan is recommended with yellow/red springs. With these larger motors you will be able to dyno all clutches, see engagement rpm, slippage ratio and were total lock-up of clutch occurs or were its back to one to one (direct drive). With the “Pro” software you can overlay up to six graphs at a time, including clutch dyno pulls, click on any part of the graph to see increments of torque/hp in 1/100ths of an increment. Or ZOOM in on any part of the graph down to 30 rpm increments. For example, testing top end headers, (6000 to 6400) rpm. See up to 10 columns of data side by side up to 10 columns wide or see “data & difference” which shows you plus/minus data in the third column running vertically down the page. This is a very simple dyno which will last many years. Software can be run on Windows 95’ to Vista. A basic Celeron laptop will work just fine ($500.00). You may need a USB to Serial port Adapter for newer computers without a serial port or purchase a newer system that works thru your USB ports. We will be glad to explain and quote anything your interested in.

We are very interested in building any type of custom dynos, which includes, harleys, cars or trucks, chassis dynos, any type of engine!!!!!!!!!!!

(1) STARTER RELAY UPDATE KIT-($43.87) this is for customers that have my dyno with electric start and wish to update or customers that are putting electric start on their dynos. It includes a wiring harness with (2) relays, a heavy duty fuse link with 30 amp fuse. We’ve found out the solenoid is not getting enough amps when we have a 25 to 30 foot of wiring to the starter. This stops those false starts were solenoid doesn’t engage or were starter seems to crank real slow at first. We also recommend using 2 gauge battery cables. This combination increases cranking speeds by 20 to 25%!

(2) DIRECT DRIVE KIT TO REPLACE ONE-WAY SPRAG & TORSION SHOCK KIT-($106.24) -we have found out the one-way sprag disengages and engages at high engine rpm. By replacing it with a solid shaft and leaving the torsion shock bushing in, we have extremely repeatable results. Five dyno pulls with only 2/100ths of a horsepower difference in some cases.

(3) 1 ¼” ROUND TO 1 3/8”-6 SPLINE ADAPTER KIT ($165.24)-This converts 1 ¼” round shaft with ¼” keyway to one-way sprag clutch and then to a adapter to adapt it to another 1 ¼” shaft. Allows you to put a one-way sprag clutch between your flywheel and your main dyno axle.

(4) 2009 QUARTER MIDGET CLUTCH DYNO OPTION- ESTIMATED COST $605.47-Allows a person to dyno HONDA, WORLD FORMULA, DECO CONTINETIAL 6 to1 gear box engines just like a standard engine- measure torque, horsepower, acceleration, air/fuel ratio, any options you order on data system. I have not put this on a Briggs 6 to 1 (Sun Gear) but it will be possible?

(5) We do make an electric start, belt drive Quarter Midget Dyno (with or without one-way sprag clutch) that dyno off the end of the crankshafts of Honda 6 to 1 gear box motors. This is a “Pro” version dyno, more for the Professional engine builders. I’m not sure this will work on Deco-Continental or Briggs.

(6) 2008 ELECTRIC START COMPLETE KIT-($714.35)-We’ve made some changes, installed a relay kit so solenoid and starter engage better with more amps and installed 2 gauge battery cables. These two changes make starter system crank about 20 to 25% faster. This may help some of you that break belts on the Animal motors. Crank the engine up to a highest flywheel R.P.M., before opening throttle and letting up on ignition switch. This will minimize belt breakage. Also hold brakes down when killing engine, and don’t let up till flywheel rotation has stopped. The “NEW” 2008 belt system helps tremendously!

(7) “NEW” 2008 35MM BELT DRIVE-($999.99)-This comes with two Kevlar belts-This has a larger sprocket on the main dyno axle and a larger driver with more teeth engaged on the engine. This new belt system almost totally eliminates belt breakage, even on animals. We also have a slightly smaller sprocket for customers wanting to dyno very low horsepower engines. Call me with Questions? Replacement belts are about 40% off list price. If your doing a large quality of 2-cycle engines, tell me because we do have a different combination that works with both 2 & 4 cycle but is a little more expensive. Or we can do a jackshaft that will allow multiple gear ratios and combinations. This to is also a little more expensive to.

(8) DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEMS-wiring in shop must be grounded! We can offer a used original datamite system with premium flywheel sensor, complete wiring harness, up to date software with unlock code & license, one channel analog converter box with new 14mm head temp sensor, manual, power supply-$599.99. This will allow you to do S.A.E. weather correction manually. Or buy a USB to serial port adapter & weather modem and have it download thru USB port, ($175.00). I do have a few digital weather stations left for manual S.A.E. weather correction ($150.00) or can supply with modems ($175.00) to download to computer. The New Mini-USB Basic has been out which I did some testing on, works greats. I’ve sold several and zero problems. I sell it in a basic version with internal S.A.E. weather correction, dual temp with head and exhaust/liquid sensor, no engine rpm, so no clutch testing, with rare earth magnets, Pro software, new manual with newest updates, set-up and training over the phone. The above is what most customers want. Price is $1366.28. If you want something cheaper than this, call me, we can do a very basic system and then gradually add to it if that’s what you want? Next step up is Mini-USB PRO, same as what is listed except comes with engine RPM sensor and inductive pick-up box and wiring harness. Price is $1633.68. Next up is the USB III PRO-This includes everything that the USB MINI-PRO has except it has 4 long temp leads/channels for temperature, and 4 sensors, and more expansibility. The 4-cycle people can measure head temp, exhaust temp, engine oil temp, Air/Fuel Ratio all at one time on the computer screen and print out in report form and graph the data. You can also purchase a temp sensor so air temp can be measured as its going into carb. Price is $1735.65. Another option is Air/Fuel Ratio which is an optional price to, but can be measured thru this system. Remember with Pro Software, you can overlay up to six graphs at a time, click on any rpm increment and see hp & torque in 100ths of an increment. ZOOM in on any part of graph down to 30 rpm increments and compare up to 10 columns of data at a time in report form. Go for a wide screen LCD monitor or laptop. Add a color printer or all-in-one (move your old printer to the dyno & get an Epson 600/800 for the office?) and you’ll love it. Don’t forget all these systems can dyno clutches! See engagement RPM, see slippage ratio, see total lock-up of the clutch and again compare up to six graphs at a time! Gotta get the horsepower to the ground! Remember, if you send me your computer/Laptop, I’ll help you with all installation, set-up and training and answer all follow up questions. I train you in not only dynoing engines but how to dyno clutches correctly. You get all my phone numbers for any questions you might have or help with problems at any time. You can fax or e-mail printouts and we can discuss over the phone to make sure you understand al aspects of program?

This will cause your horsepower to drop slightly for a short time. This is synthetic grease so it is thin in viscosity and will not affect HP as much by low room temperature.

(10) ADD-ON ONE-WAY SPRAG KIT WITH TORSION SHOCK SYTEM-$717.31- This is an option for any of the following dynos. It comes standard with a 75 hp sprag clutch. There is a 100 hp sprag that can be used as any option (add$65.00). This kit is designed for 1¼” or 1 ½” shafts. Larger sizes will be slighter higher. This option allows a one-way sprag clutch to be added on dynos up to 100 hp. Horsepower’s above 100 hp, we’ll use a more expensive sprag clutch if you want one.

(11) 2009 ONE-WAY SPRAG KIT FOR 1 ¾” & 2” FLYWHEEL SHAFTS-$899.99-This is a heavy duty sprag kit for use with flywheels axles 1 ¾” & larger. Includes a 100 hp sprag clutch. Used for engines above 30 hp. I recommend a 175 amp welder with .030” wire or larger. Many of the smaller parts are ready to assemble and many are already welded. This includes a completely assembled balanced flywheel assembly with every part to make a 36” x 36” engine/clutch dyno. You supply motor mount, and computer system, clutch (Premier Titan recommended with red or yellow springs), surge protector. Wiring in shop must be grounded. I do have some used digital weather stations for manual S.AE. weather correction. Used original data systems ( included) with one channel of head temperature, cost about $599.99, which includes premium axle sensor and new 14mm head temperature sensor. Will work on Windows 95 to Vista. Does include newest most up to date software. You can ship me your computer for complete installation of software and set-up and testing ($75.00). Or we can do over the phone which can take about two to three hours for installation and training. Call with zip code for freight estimate. Residential freight will cost $50.00 more. Best if you can find someone with forklift and loading dock.

(14) 2009 P.A.K. CLUTCH DYNO-$3499.99-This is a dyno were I weld the main frame up. Do all work on the flywheel, assemble, remove, computer balance and reinstall, install & tack weld brake bracket, tack weld motor mount rails, tack weld top flywheel cover. Tack weld control stand. You do all finish welding. I will help you with software installation & set-up. You get everything to build a complete clutch type dyno (you use a clutch on the engine to measure hp & tq.) You will need to supply motor mount & complete computer system. For high hp engines above 30 hp, see 40mm dyno.

(15) 2008 BASIC CLUTCH TYPE DYNO-($3922.68)-This is priced with a used data system. We can price with a new system if you want & pay difference. This price includes a 25 hp balanced flywheel with premium NTN Ultra-class pillow block bearings along with a heavy duty sprocket hub and #53 tooth sprockets so you can dyno clutches. It includes a 36” x 36” table with 1 ¼” stress-proof axle, motor mount rails, side panels and one end panel. Powder coated medium silver. If you do not want powder coating-deduct $135.00. You would need to supply international (wide) motor mount with wings, basic computer with color printer. Remember, if your computer crashes, you’ll pay me an hourly wage to reinstall and set-up software, so install new hard drill if it’s over 2 years old. The recommended clutch is a Premier Titan with yellow/red springs ($150.00). I can supply a complete computer system ($549.99 to $749.99) and install software and set-up and test. Optional 29 hp flywheel-add $113.00. This does include a small parts kit to make sure you have everything to get started. This dyno can be updated to electric start and belt drive? For applications above 30 hp, I’d recommend 1 ¾” stress-proof axle or larger (including axle bearings).

(16) 2008 ONE-WAY SPRAG CLUTCH DYNO-($4650.59) This is the same dyno as above #14 except with a large torsion shock bushing, (2) couplers, and a one-way sprag clutch assembly with axle adapter. If you hear an engine pulling down (forgot to put oil in it) like it’s about to lock up, you can let up on throttle and motor will stop and flywheel will coast till you hit the brake system. One-way sprag needs to be greased at least once a month. Sprag can be locked up (grade 8 or 9 bolt) so you can dyno clutches! This price will be with used original data system with head temp sensor. S.A.E. weather correction would be done manually. Again, you will have to talk to me about what data system and options you want. I always quote everything on paper and e-mail (pdf) or fax you the quote. You will need a Premier clutch with yellow/red springs, a motor mount, and a basic computer system with color printer. This does includes small parts kit to get you started. This dyno as a P.A.K. dyno ($4227.90). Call with questions? This will be made so electric start & belt drive can be added at a later date.

(17) 2009 25 H.P. This dyno is more for the serious engine builder. Optional larger flywheels’ can be installed for their additional price. You will be able to dyno clutches on this dyno with add on (add $200.00). I can supply a computer system (laptop or desktop, $550.00-$750.00) for you along with a printer ($79.99 & up). You will need a surge protector (10 outlet, $39.99) and wiring in shop must be grounded. You will need to supply an international motor mount and high amperage top post battery for electric start and need a 10 to 20 amp battery charger. If you do not want sprag clutch kit-deduct $727.00 from price. Then it will be direct drive, see #17.

2009 AXLE/FLYWHEEL ASSEMBLIES

04/20/09

From experience in building over 120 assemblies, we make sure these are built correctly to allow no axle keyway wear, loosening or wobbling. The flywheel is built to be used as a brake rotor. We have the outside and inside diameter cut with a CNC torch. Both sides are then ground on a Blanchard grinder so they are parallel. Then we weld on a special female type hub assembly. The axle and male hub are put together and torqued up straight using a dial indicator so that the face run-out is less than .015”. We can use any axle size from 1” to 4”.Normally we use 1 ¼” stress-proof steel for flywheels under 30 hp, with keyways cut only were they need to be. We never have a keyway where the bearing is going to ride. We stock axles in 1 ¼”, 1 ½” and 1 ¾” in lengths to 47.5”. We can custom make whatever you want. We stock one-way sprag clutches and torsion shock systems and can get most sizes overnight. If you want us to ship a flywheel/axle assembly to you, we will need your zip code for a freight estimate. We use a “NEW” freight carrier (as of 11/01/08) and these guys have unreal prices compared to what I used to get. Between the drop in fuel prices and the new freight service, your cost might be 50% cheaper than it was a few months ago? Residential deliveries cost an optional $50.00. It’s best to ship to someone with a forklift and loading dock. The flywheel will be banded on a pallet and shrink wrapped. These assemblies include VERY high quality Japanese NTN ULTRA CLASS pillow block bearings with eccentric lock collars unless you do not want them. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND any cheap import pillow block bearings. I have had some of these fail in less than 30 days! We stock & do recommend Loctite Viper Lube grease for the bearings! These (flywheel assemblies) are computer balanced to less than 5 grams at 500 rpm’s. There is a heavy duty sprocket hub included with a 53 tooth #35 or #65 tooth #219 sprocket so you can dyno clutches if you buy the correct software and electronics. You must have engine rpm inductive pick-up box & wiring harness. If you plan on adding electric start or belt drive it is best to add that to axle before balancing the assembly. You can get by and add later if you have to. If you are using a clutch to dyno engines, use a 24 or 29 hp flywheel with a higher gear ratio so you aren’t so hard on your clutch or don’t bring engine rpm much below clutch engagement rpm. For 1” PTO shafts, I’d use a Tobias clutch which comes on most Slingshots karts. For ¾” shafts (Briggs 5 hp & Animals, Clones, Honda, Deco Continental, etc), I recommend a Premier Titan clutch with yellow or red springs. Horsepower ratings are for approximately 15 second dyno pulls. I highly recommend installing the flywheel so that electric start and belt drive can be added at a later date. We do sell dynos in kit form so all you do is weld it up and start using it. You will get every part with a basic blueprint. We build dynos up to 125 horsepower or more with multiple flywheels so you can do 3 hp up to 125 hp. Please note that for flywheels above 30 hp, I recommend 1 ½’’ to 1 ¾’’, or 2 1/4” stress-proof axles and those above 40 hp. The following are the most common flywheels that we sell.

We now build a custom dual #219 & #35 chain sprocket hub (1/2” bore to 2.25” bore) using a QD hub.
2001 TO 2009 “PRO” SERIES DYNO

This is the number #1 selling dyno for me. The “new” 2009 models have a new synchronous belt drive system that has almost totally eliminated belt breakage. With the old 30mm belt drive, a customer could break two to three belts a month with heavy use.

The new system uses a wider Kevlar belt with larger pulleys both top & bottom.

The “new” electric start system also has been improved. We’ve went to larger battery cables. We’ve also went to a starter relay system so the starter gets more voltage and amperage. Cranking speeds have gone up 20 to 25 percent. This helps start the engine quicker. No more fast starts or clicks of the starter with the dyno turning over.

This dyno comes standard with a 25 hp flywheel. Many of you want a 30 hp flywheel for the animal Ltds & some over engines coming into popularity. The longer the dyno pull in time (seconds), the more accuracy. This dyno comes standard with a torsion shock system and a 75 hp one-way sprag clutch. An optional 100 hp sprag clutch is an available for a small optional price. We do offer another dyno with flywheels up to 49 hp that can use a one-way sprag clutch. The reason we’re going to a different flywheel is to save you money in freight costs!

The pictures highlight some of the most common used options.

This dyno normally comes with one-way sprag clutch or can be bought for about $717.00 less without sprag clutch & torsion shock system. So this dyno would be electric start direct drive.

Here’s an example of a datamite system with 4 analog temp channels.

Not only can you measure normal head temperature but now you can measure exhaust temp, crankcase oil temp, carb air inlet temp and see torque & horsepower all in one report. Put in the report the range of data you wish to look at, (say 4000 to 6500). Put in the increment of engine rpm you wish to see, normally 100 rpms for unrestricted motors. Put in the range of average data you want to look at (5500 to 6400). Remember, you may wish to toggle back & forth between the numbers in this report and your acceleration report data so think of that when choosing your rpm ranges. Also, don’t forget to look the bottom of the columns for average data in the range you set. If you or your customer has several motors, dyno & compare each and see which one is the strongest in the hp column. Then also switch to the acceleration report to see if that motor is also the fastest in acceleration from the range you’ve chosen, (5500 to 6600), for example. If you’re using a My-chron #3 or #4 or one of the newer Digitrons, you may be able to download your data from your local race track and give it to your engine builder so he knows the range of rpm you use at your local track? By using the acceleration data, he/she should be able to fine tune the engine (internal/external parts) and get you a much wider engine rpm range to help you on the race track. Going fast cost money, so don’t be surprised if you need a different carb, cam, header, etc.

The engine builder should be able to prove to you which parts made a difference on your engine so you’ll know their not wasting your money! They should also be able to dyno your clutch and see if it’s working also. A new Bully or Tomar slips at about 1.5 to 1 with metallic discs. If you’re getting beat on the starts or on the restarts, your clutch may be the problem, not the motor. They should be able to see how much your clutch slips and at what rpm it hooks up.

Here’s a dyno pull comparasion of a Chinese yellow clone motor on gas. We started with a stock engine with a stock muffler, put in 16 oz. of 10w30 oil and did a couple of dyno pulls. Engine ran very bad, sounded like a bad spark plug. As you can see by the lower dyno pull engine surged very bad due to very lean condition. Made 4.6 hp at maximum at 3000 rpm. First thing we did was remove stock muffler and replace it with a small header we got from ARC. Really didn’t help much, engine still very lean. Drilled main jet out to .037″ and dyno again. Engine souded very strong and made big jump in horepower. We then tryed Animal springs instead of stock springs. Really didn’t do anything, in fact lost hp on top end. Went back to stock springs and stuck on large RLV header. Made a pretty good jump in hp. Ended up with large RLV header and .036″ jet. I don’t think this header will be legal for the rules that I skimmed thru very quickly but just for your infomation. I think the small header from ARC ran best with a .035″ jet. I know A.R.C. & J.C. Specialtys both have parts for these.
About 5400, this motor really fill off. A couple of people have told me spring pressures will make a big difference but they will not be legal!
The dyno sheet show a comparision of a bone stock engine with how we ended up with all stock parts except for jet change. Tightening valve lash settings didn’t make much differance. Ended up gogin back to .003″. Max torque was at 3600 rpm, peak hp at 4900 after jet change.

A lot of you ask about dynoing a clutch. It’s very easy! Open your software to the dyno screen, put in your correct ratio, sprocket number divided by clutch driver size. In this case, 53 tooth divided by 16 tooth clutch driver, =3.31. Start your motor up; hit the gas to wide open throttle. Do this a minimum of at least twice to warm up clutch. Watch the flywheel rpm screen to see about what engine rpm the clutch is slipping at currently. After a few seconds, the rpm will go higher (clutch locks up or quits slipping). I always recommend you take engine rpm to a minimum of 5500. Down load data and look at it. Graph it with using clutch /converter slip in relation to engine rpm. On this print out, you’ll see clutch engages at 3100, slips up to 4 to 1 ratio which isn’t real bad, then has total lock-up at about 4050 rpm, were line is almost flat again. This example is a JRII IKF motor with a .500” tapered restrictor. You’ll learn after a while that the clutches with sintered metallic discs tend to be the best. The ceramic and organic discs do not seem as good. On the real low hp engines, some people like the clutch to slip a little so it does not bog the motor. This depends on your preference of what works for you? Motors with higher horsepower tend to slip more! Lower numeric gear ratios tend to slip more!

How to do the test? On the second rpm pull to warm up the clutch, brake flywheel rpm down to 900 rpm, engage data system, wait a couple of seconds, go wide open throttle, take engine rpm to at least 5000. Download & look at data by graphing it. Remember with Pro software you can look at data in time/seconds just to see how long it took clutch to hook up. Remember you can also do up to six overlays in graphing mode.

If you have a customer getting killed on the starts or restarts and then he/she runs them down and passes people later in the race, they may have a clutch problem?

Also if you race at a track the uses Calcium Chloride, you’re much more apt to have sticking levers on the clutches. No chemicals seem to remove the oxidations. The only way I found to get clutch back to normal is take it apart and file out area were levers actually work. Then maybe spray a clear acrylic over the area to keep it from happening again?
